ABSTRACT

It should be obvious that a certain amount of tension and stress is present in any situation that involves contact between individuals. Stress is an integral part of a comprehensive adaptation pattern. If it manifests itself in a limited amount it enhances alertness and communication as well as understanding of psychotherapeutic process, but if it becomes excessive it can precipitate an emotional state such as alarm, anxiety, anger, guilt, shame, fear or depression which can be disruptive to therapeutic aims. I shall endeavour in this chapter to present a situation in which excessive stress has affected therapists in various ways and suggest some remedies to deal with these problems.
