ABSTRACT

Electronic communication has become one of the newest strategies to support learning. The most important aspect of this is the ability for learners and teachers to communicate and to collaborate regardless of time and distance. Of course, the printed word has permitted this for many years, but books and other writings are usually ‘finished’ static communication. In contrast computer-mediated communication can permit learners in many locations and time zones to collaborate and support each other in their learning. This chapter provides an overview of recent applications and reports on the ways in which electronic mail and other applications have been used in the classroom. However, most of the chapter is devoted to an illustrated discussion of applications to support student teachers and the continuing professional development of teachers.
