ABSTRACT

INTRINSIC COMPLEXITY VS. REGENERATION Let me reiterate, in new terms, a central principle in the evolution of neural function. The principle is dual. 1. As the nervous system increases in intrinsic geometric complexity, it and the gross body periphery lose the ability to regenerate. 2. What the intrinsic geometric complexity comprises is this: the ability to make, sustain, and continually remake dynamic internal models of the ontogenic environment, where model means descriptive geometry.
