ABSTRACT

Training should supply clinicians with sufficient knowledge about effective intervention strategies as well as enhance their skills to assist patients with the motivation and skills to make a quit attempt. Training should also foster an attitude toward tobacco dependence as a standard of good practice (Kottke et al., 1992). The USDHHS clinical practice guideline for treating tobacco use and dependence recommends that healthcare systems offer clinicians regular credit-based training in tobacco dependence treatment through lectures, seminars, and in-services (Fiore et al., 2000).
