ABSTRACT

Clergyman: ‘I wanted a job where I couldn’t touch the bottom.’ Dying person: ‘Dying is that sort of job too.’

(Adapted from Mayne 1989)

‘Doing it my way’ implies my being in control. Unfortunately, death is not so amenable to being controlled: I may want to die my way, but my dying body may not cooperate. In this chapter, I explore the relationship between control and dependency.
