ABSTRACT

One of the dilemmas in the enterprise of reviewing a wide subject field like physical education is what to select and what to reject. My own prejudices reflect a concern for curriculum and teaching in schools and a narrow view of research in higher education. Much of the research endeavours within this in higher education centre on the sports sciences, which have little real relevance for physical education; I have therefore chosen not to include them in this essay. Even though I believe that much of the current research in physical education has little significance for most teachers, it is quite clear that much of the best work in schools reflects the collaborative endeavours of key figures in higher education who believe in promoting informed practice. In this chapter I shall explore current developments in the curriculum and their association with teaching and learning. This will be followed by an exploration of some research initiatives in higher education.
