ABSTRACT

Why do theatre and drama continue to claim their place in the educational landscape? Why is it that theatre and drama playa powerful cultural role in society but are not required as part of the compulsory school curriculum? Why do they have to battle to secure a legitimate place in the curriculum? This chapter seeks to answer these questions by providing an overview of the main orientations and critical issues in drama/theatre education, and by examining the current ideas of the central leaders in the field, including their ways of knowing and teaching through drama/theatre and within this art form.
