ABSTRACT
Public archaeology in the United States encompasses the activities of a wide range of agencies and organizations at the national, state and local levels. All share a central purpose: managing the nation’s archaeological heritage in the best interests of the public. Federal archaeology is part of the larger national historical preservation programme, which operates by authority of various laws and is frequently refer red to by the generic term, ‘cultural resource management’.
