ABSTRACT

The ball put into play in Chapter 1 is now back in my court. The main questions to be addressed in this final chapter are whether the focus on flexibility has proved fruitful and whether the hypotheses presented in Chapter 1 receive support from the other contributors. In addition, I want in Part II to take up the issue raised in various of the contributions of the nature of the relationship between flexibility and long-run economic development, and in Part III to consider whether and how flexibility can be actively promoted through the instruments of economic and social policy.
