ABSTRACT
The year 1917 started out badly for the Allies: the German U-boat campaign seemed on the brink of success. France and Britain suffered appalling losses in offensives on the Western Front leading to mutinies in the French Army, and the Central Powers smashed the Italians at Caporetto. But two events overshadowed all others: the entry of the United States into the conflict and the military collapse of Russia.
