ABSTRACT

Never have expectations from the marriage relationship been so high, nor so contradictory. The traditional desire for stability, homelife and responsibility to the extended family coincides with anticipation of personal individuation and growth. Each partner is expected to take responsibility for his or her own growth and yet also foster the other’s happiness. Marriage itself is moving from an institution based on predesignated roles stressing duty and obligation, to a more spontaneous, individualistic relationship almost resembling therapy for the members.
