ABSTRACT

The installation at the UBC Museum of Anthropology-which I was responsible for, along with exhibition designer David Cunningham-included six paintings and a number of small installations of “Indian-kitsch” and reappropriated consumer-based popular representations of “Indians.” In one of the installations, a chief’s feather bonnet, a pair of moccasins, and a tomahawk/pipe from the Museum’s permanent collection were also used. This group of works was installed in two different galleries within the Museum’s visiblestorage area. As well, there were two participatory components in the exhibition: a comment book, and a display unit which also served as a collection box for viewers’ voluntary contributions of objects related to the issues raised in the exhibition.
