ABSTRACT

This useful anthology (henceforth BCLS) assembles twenty-nine out-ofprint papers presented at Chicago Linguistic Society (CLS) meetings in the late 1960s and early 1970s.1 These were the glory years of the Society, when generative semantics and natural phonology dominated theoretical linguistics in the United States, and the CLS was the principal forum for the exchange of the latest ideas in these kindred frameworks.2
