ABSTRACT
Those who dial the advertised numbers soon learn that the fare is multifarious, indeed. The more forthcoming may choose to interact with live ‘performers’ (‘Call me 1 to 1 we’ll talk’; ‘Telephone Threesomes’). Specialist preferences are commonly indicated (‘Domination-Strict Mistress will phone you back’, Sunday Sport, 7/1/94). For the less forthcoming, eavesdropping on the ‘live chat’ of others may be a more preferable option. The more reticent have a vast range of non-interactive or variously interactive pre-recorded audio tapes from which to make their selection. Non-interactive tapes run from start to finish, without the caller doing more than keeping the telephone off the hook after dialling. Interactive tapes demand, at the very least, a sound from the caller to trigger the script. In their more complicated variations, different responses call forth
different scripts. Again, gaps may be provided in the tape recorded scripts to enable a simulated live conversation. The caller is invited to respond to alternative sets of pre-recorded scripts designed to cater for the variations in the caller’s preferred fantasies.
