ABSTRACT

As a Marxist and activist in the trades union and labour movement I have campaigned for over ten years for transsexual rights, ever since I took those first life-altering steps of receiving hormones as a prelude to electrolysis and surgery. Even as I have done so I have had a fundamental feeling of personal inauthenticity, which I attribute to a basic awareness of alienation in an existentialist sense.1
