ABSTRACT
This chapter considers the size and structure of the probation systems covered by the studies, how they are located within the criminal justice system in terms of employment status, and probation officers’ relationship with the courts. The first part of the chapter presents straightforward statistical information on each system; the second explores the formal and working relationships which exist between probation officers and the courts.
