ABSTRACT

Cohesion is the formal, linguistic means that texts have for showing that they have structure beyond that of the clause. Cohesive devices include pronouns, repetition, ellipsis (missing things out), coordination, subordination. For example (cohesive devices in italics):

Because(1) it was raining, I picked up my(2) coat and(3) put it(4) on. I(5) went to the door and(3) after(6) I(5) opened it(4) (7) went outside.
