On the track of awareness

Clearly, there is still much uncertainty about the nature of our butterfly. Is it the fragile by-product of evanescent patterns of self-referential electrochemical activity in the brain only? Or, hatched from such a source, does it take on a life of its own spreading its wings across the universe? The contrast between these two views is large and ought to have observable consequences.
