ABSTRACT
In May 19911 started sixteen months of anthropological fieldwork in the village of Schopflach in Thuringia, which was formerly part of the German Democratic Republic (GDR).1 Some months prior to my arrival, the state authorities had placed some seventy Jews in a hostel there, ostensibly as a temporary measure.2
