ABSTRACT
The concept of minority is an elastic one: it connotes both ideology and material difference; it captures and contains the notions of ‘otherness’ and subordination; it allows the exploration of the institutionalisation of difference, and the establishment and maintenance of control and dependency. In this chapter, it serves as a useful heuristic device to consider the prostitute, prostitution and sexually transmitted disease under colonialism.
