ABSTRACT
Mental illness has two distinctive claims on the sociological imagination. First, responses to, and the treatment of, mental illness are among the most significant expressions of medically-based social control. Second, those signs and symptoms pathognomonic for mental illness are distinctively social in character, often constituting breaches of the norms which guide face-to-face interaction.
