ABSTRACT

The chapter by Weltevreden exposes the strategy ofthe European Community, in particular with regard to telecommunications. It shows that two lines of policy are pursued: first support to research development activities and secondly standardization and rule-making aiming at a certain balance of 'liberalization' and 'harmonization'. He mentions the various institutes, directives and subsidized programmes that relate to these purposes. Weltevreden foresees a drastic increase of international communication and a decrease of telecommunication costs.
