ABSTRACT

SUMMARY In this chapter, a theoretical framework for the computerization and the strategystructural evolution of industrial organizations is developed. Two main roles of information systems are defined. In their first role, information systems increase the coordination efficiency of the existing stable organization. In their second role, they create, combined with telematics, innovative options for the coordination of business chains, and drive the organization towards strategystructural transition. In the longitudinal case analysis of a Nordic high-technology enterprise, a new, intermediate role of informative systems in organizational evolution is found: since the computerization process began in the middle of the enterprise's transition phase, it progressed emergently, showing features of both main roles. This stresses the need to manage computerization as a technoorganizational innovation process. Already in stable periods in organizational evolution, conditions for innovation management and the integration potential of information systems should be provided for. This helps in the management of the required role switches that is vital for innovative computerization.
