Surpassed only by the words corresponding to ‘much’, ‘big’, ‘good’, ‘new’ and ‘whole’, norsk-‘Norwegian’—is among the adjectives most frequently used in Norwegian newspapers (see Heggstad, 1982). All words considered, it is still one of the most common; in the dictionary of frequencies, it is ranked as no. 84. More common are almost exclusively particles like ‘and’, ‘in’, ‘of, ‘on’, and ‘but’. Among the words indicating an interest or a commitment to values, it is preceded only by no. 72-kroner-the name of the Norwegian currency. In this respect, words pointing to other standards-vakker (‘beautiful’) in 3,495th place, klok (‘wise’) in 7, 140th-are reduced to mere insignificance.
