ABSTRACT
Ludwig Lachmann cast a spell. Almost, as it were, against your will, this modest and amiable man would induce you to change your thinking radically. He carried an unpalatable message that most of us, at first, wanted to reject. But for many of us the message came through in the end. When Lachmann first came to participate in the Austrian revival of the 1970s, few Austrians found his message hospitable. But when he left this group with his much grieved death, many of its most creative thinkers, most perhaps, were won over to the general contours of his position (Vaughn 1994).
