ABSTRACT
This chapter outlines some of the ways in which the social sciences, and sociology in particular, have sought to examine health, illness and disability. The chapter describes and contrasts the medical and social models of health, and examines sociological theories which attempt to provide a framework within which to interpret the social nature of responses to illness and disease.
