ABSTRACT
This chapter provides an introduction to the development of health services in the UK from the first half of the nineteenth century to the second half of the twentieth century including the establishment of the NHS. It will indicate some of the factors that may be seen to have influenced these developments. Through the use of
particular examples it will illustrate the extent to which there is an important historical dimension to contemporary issues of cost containment, community care and the organisation of health services.
