ABSTRACT
This chapter provides an introduction to the more recent history of the NHS in Britain with particular reference to the effects of the change of government in 1979. It will illustrate the continuing significance of certain issues. These include the concerns about the costs of the NHS and the adequacy of its financial, organisational and management arrangements.
