ABSTRACT

If the sun happens to shine through a storm cloud we might be lucky enough to see a rainbow. The different colours of the rainbow, each vibrating at a different wave length, comprise the spectrum which makes up white light. Consciousness likewise comprises a spectrum of different levels ranging from the simple to the complex. In fact whatever exists, whether mind or matter, is hierarchically ordered: a living body is a set of interdependent subsystems of limbs and organs. The same applies to any form of social organisation, whether it is the civil service or a colony or ants. Any solid substance can be reduced to molecules, molecules to atoms, atoms to particles, and down through the sub-atomic spectrum to the non-material energy network that underpins all existence. How is this energy to be conceived?
