ABSTRACT

This short account considers the official administrative statistics on industrial injury which are produced by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). In particular, it looks to the future and considers whether, in the 1990s, a point has been reached when none of these statistical series-for fatalities; for major injuries; and for three day and over injuries-can provide satisfactory monitoring of improvements or otherwise in safety for employees in UK manufacturing. First, the fatality rate is briefly discussed, then the rate for major injuries, then the rate for over three day injuries. The importance of the special trailer to the 1990 Labour Force Survey (LFS) is also briefly considered.
