ABSTRACT

In the preceding two chapters of this study, I established certain gross properties of FRCs, namely, that they consist of a Head-pro and a sister amount relative clause which, at S-Structure, exhibits in [SPEC, C’] either a wh(-like) phrase or an NO. In this third chapter, I propose to achieve a number of goals, in particular: (i) to account for the fact that FRCs have essentially the external syntax (that is, distribution) of the properly contained categories with which they are coindexed; (ii) to provide an account of the ways in which FRCs differ from OHRCs in respect to internal syntax, in particular, in exhibiting (apparently) universal anti-Pied-Piping effects, as well as language-specific Kase-matching effects subject to systematic variation-these effects being moreover restricted to FRCs with an overt wh(-like) phrase in [SPEC, C’] (at S-Structure); and (iii) to provide an analysis of FRCs of non-nominal category, first and foremost of those with a ‘missing preposition’.
