ABSTRACT

References for extracts are arranged alphabetically by author. Readers can thus use the references in two ways: to follow up an extract in the work from which it is taken, or as an index, to trace all the extracts from a particular author through the book. Page references are preceded by the relevant chapter and extract number in bold type. (Where appropriate book, chapter and line references are given immediately below each extract in the text, thus enabling readers to refer to more than one edition of a work.) All texts have been modernised, and punctuation and capitalisation of modernised texts have in some cases been simplified. Titles given below extracts have been modernised and shortened, but the spelling of the editions used has been retained for titles in this index. Both Latin and English titles are given where I consider that this will help readers to identify a work.
