A much slighter anthology of Puritan writers is E.H.Emerson, ed., English Puritanism from John Hooper to John Milton (Durham, N.C., 1968). J.F.H.New, Anglican and Puritan (London, 1964), is a brief but far from easy account of their differences. Detailed histories of Puritanism are M.M.Knappen, Tudor Puritanism (Chicago, 1970, first pub. 1939), and P.Collinson, The Elizabethan Puritan Movement (London, 1967), for the sixteenth century; W.Haller, The Rise of Puritanism (New York, 1957, first pub. 1938), for the seventeenth century. For the Counter-Reformation, A. G.Dickens, The Counter Reformation* (London, 1968), is a general historical introduction; H.O.Evennett, The Spirit of the Counter-Reformation (Cambridge, 1968), is much more theoretical. L.L.Martz, The Poetry of Meditation (rev. edn, New Haven, 1962), explores the influence of Catholic devotion on English poets, especially Southwell, Donne and Herbert; L.B.Campbell, Divine Poetry and Drama in Sixteenth-Century England (Cambridge, 1959), explores the turning of the Bible into English literature.
