ABSTRACT

As the decades passed, the necessity to adopt a more integrative focus, which would allow dealing with the structural and persistent condition of such problems, becomes clear. It is not just a passing crisis. The environmental issue, in its dierent manifestations and intensity degrees, has been emerging in the wake of a “great transformation” in human history (to use the term coined by Karl Polanyi in 1944 to express the deeper dimension of the industrialization process and the commodication of work and nature from the eighteenth century on).
