ABSTRACT

These objectives can be achieved by considering the concepts contained in this chapter and by working through the teamwork exercises. It is important to have a clear view of the goals of teamwork, such as making collective decisions, generating ideas and providing emotional support. It is also important to be aware of the characteristics of effective teams, as well as of the ‘building blocks’ of successful team development and the essential roles which team members perform in effective teamwork. Guidelines for the coordinators of teams are offered, and practical exercises to develop greater awareness of behaviour within teams are provided. A particular concern of this chapter is the effective management of meetings; learning how to obtain a successful outcome and give satisfaction to the participants. Readers are also given guidelines on how to be effective members of teams and meetings as well as managers.
