ABSTRACT

It is important for readers to be aware that the term ‘appraisal’ is used in two different ways and they should be clear about which meaning is being used in discussions of the planning and implementation of appraisal projects. Poster and Poster name two concepts: performance appraisal and staff development review (Poster and Poster 1993:1). Performance appraisal is concerned with setting achievable goals and giving feedback to staff on their work performance which identifies their training needs and encourages better performance, so that the objectives of the organisation can be achieved. Staff development reviews are concerned with the identification of teachers’ professional development needs and the training opportunities to satisfy these needs, so that teachers can improve their performance in present and future work roles.
