ABSTRACT
According to the historian Tacitus, when the Roman general Drusus first crossed the lower Rhine in 12. B.C., ultimately in search of the mouth of the Ems, he encountered a tribe named the Frisii. Apparently he subjugated them with little trouble, and for the next three hundred years the Frisii were very much under the sway of the Roman Empire.
