ABSTRACT
This chapter provides three exercises which use different types of historical data sets: disaggregate data, comparative data, relational data. The exercises will use spreadsheets and graphs to examine specific historical themes using Excel as an exemplar. The themes are drawn from a range of historical disciplines: political history, economic and social history and demographic history. Each exercise starts with an introduction outlining the historical theme and setting the historical context. The data sets used to examine the theme are then explained, and you are prompted to build worksheets and charts from the material provided. You are finally asked to examine a number of historical questions in relation to each data set you examine. The data sets for the exercises are located in Appendix 4.
