ABSTRACT
The earliest expansion, not surprisingly, took place within Rome’s immediate neighbourhood and was occasioned by a need to acquire more land for its citizens, as well as by a desire to put a ‘buffer’ between Rome and its enemies. These motives continued to dominate Roman expansion until the middle of the third century BC, by which time she exercised some kind of control or influence over all of Italy south of the river Po.
