ABSTRACT

This chapter identifies twelve major indicators of school effectiveness. It is derived from the largest recent research study of the issue and summarises much of the understanding about schools which developed in the 1980s. One key point from this research was that the effectiveness of different schools does vary considerably and improving organisational effectiveness must therefore be a major management goal. Of course, highlighting such factors does not show how school effectiveness is realised in practice. The other papers in this section may be helpful here, though it is probably something which has to be constantly worked towards.
