ABSTRACT

Three studies were performed on the treatment of psychiatric illnesses in adolescents with alcoholic parents in Japan. (1) One outlined the problems of children with alcoholic parents in Japan. Many emotional problems were found in children with alcoholic fathers without divorces, and they also showed related psychosomatic and adaptation disorders. Many cases of child abuse, delinquency and school phobia were observed among children from alcoholic families with a high divorce rate. (2) In a survey of psychiatric illnesses in adolescents, many cases of borderline personality disorders were found among adolescents with alcoholic parents. (3) Treatment of psychiatric illnesses in 24 adolescents with alcoholic fathers was discussed, and it was found that resolving their borderline personality organization and aggression, as well as the strong conflict with their fathers, is the basic principle of such treatment, and that family therapy is also important for alcoholic families.
