ABSTRACT
This was a history-focused topic lasting half a term, taught by Helen Ingham. There is a whole-school approach to planning for science, mathematics, history and geography. Within this framework, teachers of year 2/3 children mapped out the following sequence of topics for six halfterms. They focused on one curriculum area in each topic. (This was the first topic with a history focus planned for Key Stage 1.)
Autumn Term • ‘Journeys’ (geography focus) • ‘Festivals of Light’ (science and religious education focus) Spring Term • ‘Memories of Childhood’/‘The Victorians’ (history focus) • ‘Growing Plants’ (science focus)
Summer Term • ‘Minibeasts’/‘Wild Garden’ (science focus) • ‘Local History’ (history/geography focus)
PLANNING FOR YEARS 2/3
Three year 2/3 teachers planned the topic web together but weekly planning was done by individual teachers, as it depended on the objects and photographs children brought to school.
