ABSTRACT

Historians write different accounts of the past. They differ because of the preoccupations of the age in which they live, because of their own interests and perspectives, and because historical evidence is frequently incomplete. There is no single correct view of the past. We all reconstruct our own views of the past, depending on our knowledge, political stance, class, race, gender and interests. Doing so enables us to reflect on our own position in relation to the present and to the past.
