ABSTRACT

Paradoxical interventions such as prescribing the symptom and encouraging resistance are in seeming opposition to the therapeutic goals they are designed to achieve. These intriguing techniques are receiving increased attention in the psychotherapy literature, as evidenced by the following examples: 1. A patient complaining of intense anxiety in public places is

asked to have a panic attack deliberately as the first step in bringing the symptom under control (Weakland et al., 1974, pp. 141-168).
