ABSTRACT
We do not know at what point in his life Ptolemy wrote his history of the wars of Alexander the Great. Although the work is mentioned by other ancient writers, Arrian is our only reliable source for information on it. Even in Arrian the number of actual references is not large. There used to be consensus about Ptolemy, a consensus that was epitomized, perhaps, in the work of W.W.Tarn.1
