ABSTRACT

To obtain total household incomes in a particular area we also need to estimate the number of households dependent upon state benefits (primarily the aged and those looking for work): i.e.

where I: are households with no earned income. The calculation of households dependent on state benefits is best illustrated through an example - the census ward of Armley in Leeds (see Table 8.1). If we define state benefits as falling into two categories, 'state pensions' and 'employment benefit', then we clearly need to establish the number of households containing pensioners and those containing unemployed people.
