ABSTRACT

As described in earlier chapters in this volume, individual differences in children's characteristics may constitute risk factors in specific environments. Several authors have described pioneering prevention programs incorporating knowledge about individual differences, which show considerable promise. In the previous chapter, Smith demonstrated the value of a community-based and professionally run program that uses parent counselors in a preventive role. This chapter describes a small, western Canadian, parent-run support program with a similar theoretical framework. It differs from the Temperament Program in that it is run by parents with minimal professional supervision and no direct professional involvement with participating families.
