ABSTRACT

The concept of temperament is an ancient one (Kohnstamm, 1989; Rutter, 1989). The concept has gone through cycles of prominence and neglect as a factor to be considered in explaining human behavior. Under the influence of the work of Alexander Thomas, Stella Chess, and colleagues (Thomas & Chess, 1977; Thomas, Chess, & Birch, 1968), the concept has again captured the imagination of educators, psychologists, physicians, and others interested in the development of children.
