ABSTRACT
The apparent readiness of the majority of Spanish army officers to overthrow civil government in July 1936 is sometimes taken for granted. It is probably too late now to investigate to what extent officers declined to take part in the uprising for reasons of conscience or how many officers would not have rebelled had they realized that their action would lead to a full-scale war against half of Spain. 1
