ABSTRACT

Throughout learning about the Earth in Space, size and scale cause significant problems for learners. (A note on size and scale appears on p. 000.

Because of the vast distances and sizes involved it is very difficult to find scales which are accurate and yet practical for use in diagrams either in books or in the classroom. The restrictions of a page mean that diagrams throughout these materials (as well as in books and posters) are not drawn accurately to scale. They must be used with care so as not to present a misleading picture. The Learning Guides in this domaiR are:

DAY AND NIGHT THE CHANGING YEAR

THE PHASES OF THE MOON

THE SOLAR SYSTEM I

THE UNIVERSE

THE TEACHER'S VIEW (p.395) outlines aspects of a deeper understanding which the teacher needs to have in mind whilst working with pupils.
